Glossary

As if starting university wasn't complicated enough, professors, lecturers, secretaries, fellow students, and everyone else at university seem to be doing their best to make it even more difficult by using hundreds of abbreviations or otherwise incomprehensible terms (or by using miserably long sentences). This article attempts to explain some of the most important of these terms and, where appropriate, indicate where you can find further information. Of course, it cannot be hoped to be exhaustive.

AlMa

An ugly 1970s building on Endenicher Allee that is used by many different institutes. In the past, exercise groups also took place here during the first semesters.

AWD = Anwesenheitsdienst = Attendance Service
During AWD, you will find people in the student council office (N0.001 in the annex) who you can ask questions or borrow old exams and exam transcripts from (later on). You can find out exactly when this is under AWD. Sometimes, however, AWD refers to the person who is currently performing this service. They can be found in the annex of the MZ.

BaMa = Bachelor's-Master's Office
The “Bachelor-Master Office Mathematics” provides advisory services and has also taken over the tasks of the examination office for the bachelor's and master's programs. You can find it in room 0.004 of the Mathematics Center, or on the Internet at http://www.mathematics.uni-bonn.de/studium/bachelor.

Ball
The Math Ball is an event organized by the Mathematics Student Council. It takes place once a semester, formerly in the festively decorated entrance hall of We 10, and in recent semesters in the Bad Godesberg City Hall. To refresh your rusty dancing skills or learn them from scratch, we can recommend the dance class immediately before the ball or the university sports program. For those who dislike standard dancing, we highly recommend our party.

The main branch of the ULB (Adenauerallee 39–41) mainly has literature that is geared toward non-scientific interests.

CIP Pool
Behind this mysterious name lie the university's computer rooms. Incidentally, the name comes from the “Computer Investment Program,” a funding program for universities—but practically no one knows that. The IAM computer room is no longer financed by this funding program, but by tuition fees, and is therefore officially called the PC Pool, but nobody knows that either. There is one in the annex of the MZ and one in the HRZ.

Instead, there are lots of lectures, sports tournaments, and concerts, which are also intended to attract non-students. Information on this can be found either in a brochure available in the cafeterias and institutes or on the Internet at (http://www3.uni-bonn.de/studium/studium-universale/diesacademicus).

EA 60 = Endenicher Allee 60
The address of the Mathematics Center, including the annex.

ECTS = European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System
This system is intended to make academic achievements in Germany and other European countries comparable, thus simplifying a change of university or the transfer of credits already earned when changing subjects. In this way, you collect ECTS credits, which are supposed to have a value of 30 working hours everywhere. Unfortunately, it may be that the transfer of credits when changing courses is not as straightforward as hoped, as credits are “only” a quantitative measure and not a qualitative one.
